A week before their master contract was set to expire, the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance reached a tentative agreement on a six-year contract.
Details of the agreement are not being released publicly to allow union and USMX members time to approve the document. Until the new deal is ratified, both parties will work under their pre-existing contracts.
Negotiations have been ongoing for the past eight months, and the ports were beginning to prepare for a potential strike on January 15th which has now been averted.
This new agreement should protect ILA jobs and will allow the implementation of technologies in and around the ports, with aims to make them safer, more efficient, and, in time, increase capacity.
